They invited Wang Geon, one of Gung Ye’s top military commanders, to lead a coup. Gung Ye was captured, and according to some accounts, he was executed. However, other stories suggest that Gung Ye managed to escape, disappearing into the mountains, never to be seen again.

The exact fate of Gung Ye remains one of Korea’s greatest historical mysteries. Some believe he lived out his days as a hermit, while others think he might have been secretly assassinated. His disappearance left a lasting legacy, and his former kingdom of Taebong was absorbed into Wang Geon’s new kingdom, Goryeo, which would go on to unify Korea.
